Health and Safety Policy for Commercial Waste Tottenham
This policy sets out a clear framework for managing health and safety across our commercial rubbish and waste removal operations. It applies to all staff, operatives, contractors and subcontractors engaged in the provision of commercial waste services in the company’s service area. The objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, to reduce environmental and operational risks, and to ensure compliance with applicable health and safety obligations. This document should be read alongside detailed operational procedures and site-specific risk assessments.Scope and Commitment
Our organisation is committed to delivering safe, reliable commercial rubbish collection and waste management. Senior management will provide the resources necessary to implement and maintain this policy. We will ensure hazards arising from waste handling, transfer, transportation and storage are identified and controlled. Training, supervision and the provision of appropriate personal protective equipment will be prioritised to maintain safe working conditions for all personnel.
All employees and contracted teams are responsible for following safe systems of work and reporting hazards or unsafe conditions. The company will appoint competent persons for health and safety coordination and will conduct regular audits and inspections. Performance will be monitored through leading and lagging indicators, and corrective actions will be implemented promptly to prevent recurrence of incidents.
Risk Assessment and Control Measures
Risk assessments will be carried out for all routine activities including bin lifts, manual handling, vehicle operations, loading and unloading, containment cleaning, and handling of unknown or hazardous items. Control measures include mechanical aids for lifting, secure containment of loose materials, segregation of hazardous wastes, designated loading zones and strict adherence to load limits. Where hazardous waste is encountered, work will cease until appropriate controls are in place and specialist handling is arranged.
Safe working procedures will be maintained in written form and made available to operatives. These procedures will emphasise safe segregation of recyclables and general refuse, management of sharps and medical waste when present, and protocols for dealing with chemical or biological contamination. The company will ensure suitable and sufficient COSHH-style assessments are in place for cleaning agents, fuels and other substances used in operations.
Vehicles and plant used for commercial waste removal will be maintained to a high standard. Pre-use checks, routine servicing and defect reporting are mandatory. Drivers and plant operators will be trained and assessed competent to operate their assigned equipment. Where mechanical lifting or compacting systems are used, lockout/tagout and guarding arrangements will be applied to prevent accidental activation.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Welfare
Appropriate PPE including high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, gloves, eye protection and respiratory protection where required will be provided and maintained. Employees must wear issued PPE for the tasks specified in risk assessments. Welfare facilities, safe rest areas and access to drinking water will be provided for crews to reduce fatigue and maintain well-being during shifts.
Training and competence are key. All operatives will receive induction training, task-specific instruction and periodic refresher training. Training records will be maintained and competency checks performed. Supervisors will be trained in incident investigation and in recognising signs of fatigue, stress or unsafe behaviour among crews engaged in rubbish collection and commercial waste services.
Emergency Response and Incident Reporting
Procedures for emergency situations—spills, vehicle collisions, exposure to hazardous substances, fire and medical emergencies—will be in place and communicated to all personnel. Incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported without delay and investigated to identify root causes and corrective actions. The organisation will maintain a register of incidents and will report notifiable occurrences as required by statutory obligations.
Contract Management and Third-Party Works
Where contractors are engaged, their health and safety arrangements must be evaluated before commencement and monitored during works. Contracts will require compliance with this policy and with recognised standards for commercial waste handling. The company retains the right to suspend work where contractor practices present unacceptable risk to operatives or the public.
Key responsibilities are allocated as follows:
- Senior management: policy oversight, resource allocation and compliance verification.
- Supervisors: ensuring procedures are followed, conducting site checks and maintaining records.
- Operatives: following safe systems of work, using PPE and reporting hazards.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy will be reviewed at least annually and following significant incidents, changes to operations or legal requirements. Performance metrics will drive continuous improvement in health, safety and environmental performance for all commercial waste activities. The company commits to maintaining a safe workplace and to protecting the health of employees, customers and the communities served by its rubbish and waste services.
